Default How To: Daisy Chain Fans

Another useful How To, allows you to power all your rad fans from one fan controller dial (etc etc)

This is how I do it:

And this is how it looks in real life:

I'll ask here.

Talking to Spoon about daisy chaining without a soldering iron, and he said something about pass through molex connectors.

Where can I get one(is that all I need?) of these.

PS. I have 3 Xilence fans on my rad to power.

I don't have a soldering iron though...

What's stopping me pulling the molex pins from one fan out, and sticking them inside another molex output for a different fan?

That should work right?

Yes , link black and reds together - These are the power lines.

The Yellow in the sensor/speed control - You only want 1 conected to the header.

You should be able to splice them together with a soldering iron , and it will look neat and tidy.

Found this one on the net, pretty much the same what Marcus wrote. Maybe will be easier for someone to understand.

I'm not all too good with electronics, but this is something I thought about when I read this thread.

The yellow wire; what does it do? - I thought it controlled the fan speed?

If you're cutting the yellow wires to the other fans, are you not just controlling the one fan?

meh, tell me if i'm wrong

yes the yellow controls fan speed, and if you join them there will only go at the same speed

Hi.

The yellow wire is the sensor wire for monitoring the RPM of each fan & doesn't control the fan speed. The fan uses this wire to send a signal to the mobo's fan header, where the bios or OS will adjust the voltage supplied to the fan based upon this RPM reading.

It isn't a good idea to link sensor wires together, as this will give the motherboard a false RPM reading.

If you connect the fans like that, it doesn't affect the speed of them does it? just uses up more power right?

Doesn't affect speed at all. they all get the same power so they all spin at the same speed.

Thanks for this guide! This is definately going to help me out since I got like 6 fans just on my radiator... Im wondering tho, does it work the same way with 4pin molex cables? Like would you also cut off all but 1 yellow wire? Would there be any difference in which of the 2 black wires to connect to eachother?

Btw,

First Post!! Have been lurking around for quite a while tho

Thought id better look over this thread, make sure your doing this right ..

Looks good.

Just make sure you dont try running too many fans of mobos headers.

Would be advisable to check out maximum loads allowed etc etc.

Or uprate the wire used to 16/02mm or something.

Maybe over the top, but generally you should be fine

What's the most you can wire upt o 1? I saw that KPC had a quad fan header and suggested it could be used on the mobo.... I guess it might be why they don't stock it any more or at least never have any in!

Would be nice if mobo manufacturers specified the max loads for these headers i think.

Dont expect that they ever thought you lot would get this clever i suppose.

We tend to demand more these days and a "true" tech spec of the mobos would be more help, not just how many slots they have if you know what i mean .

Im suspecting the manufacyurers will just say only 1 and anymore is at your own risk?

Just need to know max load really?
